Planning a Stylish Low Budget Wedding

Friday, June 13th, 2008

By Delilah Hatch Planning a low budget wedding? You don’t need to sacrifice style for those few extra dollars saved from your budget. If anyone understands the stress of planning a wedding it is me. They say some of the most stressful things you can do in life are planning a wedding and having a baby. I did both of those things all in the same year. In fact I was planning my wedding while I was pregnant. When my husband and I decided to get married we agreed to keep it simple. We weren’t really into the idea of a big elaborate ceremony. You know; the church, the expensive frilly dress, loads of flowers and the big reception party. So we were off to plan as simple a wedding as possible. We would stage a very simple ceremony with a justice of the peace. We would only invite our very closest of friends and family. We would not throw a huge party but simply make reservations for a semi quiet dinner at a nice restaurant. Well this is how we dreamed it would happen, and intended on it to happen, but it is not how it all went down. Once we got our parents involved it all went downhill from there. Word spread like wild fire throughout the families that we were getting married. The more that heard the news, the more people we were obligated to invite. Don’t get me wrong - it is not that we didn’t want them there but the more people invited the more money it would cost and we simply did not have it. A handful of guests turned into flying in cousins from seperate corners of the country. It basically turned into inviting the entire family! Soon there were no restaurants to fit the crowd of people we were to invite. And no small venue for the ceremony either. While I was busy endlessly searching for someplace nice (not to mention free) to stage the ceremony at, the family had started to take things into their own hands and start planning parts of the wedding for us. Before I knew it there were halls for the reception booked, cakes ordered, and a D.J. for the big party. OK so on one hand it was a nice thought to try and take some of the stress and pressure of planning this wedding off of me, but while they were helping to plan the wedding what they weren’t planning on was what all of this would cost! And boy oh boy does it cost! Caterers, bartenders, cake, dress, decorations just to name some! It all adds up fast. I’ll tell you at one point I was very close to calling it all off and eloping. Eventually every little detail did come together (after much agonizing) and the wedding went off without a hitch. It was absolutely beautiful and we had so much fun! I managed to pull it all off by cutting a few corners (and costs). I made my own decoration, centerpieces, and wedding invitations. I became a bargain shopper! One phrase to keep in mind - make it your mantra; keep it simple! Here’s a few ways I cut corners and dollars: * Where to hold the ceremony is one thing that could actually not cost you a dime! Search out a public garden or park. Lakes and beaches can be a good location also depending on the theme of your wedding. Keep in mind that some public places will require permission from the city or town. I held my ceremony in a gazebo at a public beach. I contacted the town hall and had to fill out papers for a permit to use the gazebo for the day. * Save money on flowers by holding the wedding at a garden. Another way to save on flowers would be to split the cost of flowers with another bride having their wedding on the same day. I lucked out on this as it just happened that there was a wedding earlier in the day on the same day as our wedding. They decorated the gazebo that morning. All we had to do was show up. * If you intend to have a Justice of the Peace marry you then make sure and hire someone from within the town you hold the ceremony in. Most charge a substantial amount less if they do not need to travel outside of town lines. * If you are going to rent a hall or venue for your reception ask around before you pick a place or even start looking. Chances are that you might know someone who knows someone who can help you out with a discount. My reception was held at a V.F.W hall. Just happened that a family member knew someone who worked there and gave us a deal! * Do some bargain shopping and come up with your own decorations for the reception. I wanted flowers arrangements for the centerpiece of every table, so I made them all myself. I bought vases candles and candle holders VERY CHEAP by shopping around. I then visited a flower shop. I talked to a sales girl and they were willing to give me a cheaper price since I was going to buy alot of the same flower. It was just like buying in bulk. They included baby’s breath and greens so I could make my own arrangements. The caterers were providing all of the linens so all I had to do was put my centerpieces together and place them on the tables. * Make your own invitations! I made all my own invitations, R.S.V.P. cards and printed little cards to fit into the inside with directions to the ceremony as well as the reception. For tips and instructions on how to make your own invitations without sacrificing style go to this site; do-it-yourself-invitations.com Follow these tips and hopefully you will have just as great a wedding as I did while keeping it well within your budget. After all the most important thing is that you and all your guest have a great time and a day to remember forever! What To Watch Out for on Christian Dating Sites

Monday, June 9th, 2008

By Jennifer C You may have thought that all Christian dating services were created equal youd be sadly misinformed. You might even have thought that they were all owned by well-intentioned Christians and be surprised to find out that they were owned by a company that all runs slightly hotter dating sites! Instead of making the mistake of signing up with the first singles site that you come across when surfing the web, take just five minutes to check out the following tips:-
Does the site have a statement of faith anywhere if not, it probably isnt run or owned by Christians
Are there contact details easily accessible so you can email or phone someone if you have a question or a problem
Is there a privacy policy clearly visible on the first page. You are giving out very sensitive information about yourself so youll want to know its kept safely and not sold to anyone
You can find out who owns a website by looking them up at WhoIs.net
and finally, do you feel happy with the tone and approach of the site itself? If youre unsure, simply bookmark the page to return later. Dont sign up straight away and take time out to check out a few other dating services first. These simple checks can help to ensure your online safety and keep you safe from those who want to exploit Christians simply to make money. Make sure you find the right Christian online dating service for you. This article was submitted by Jennifer Carter, who writes for Online Christian Dating Services. Keeping Marketing Simple / Ten Simple Steps

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

By Jay Conners 1. Business Cards It is very important to market yourself via business cards. You should be making a conscious effort to hand out ten per day at the very least.
Have them on you at all times, and keep a supply in your car just in case.
When doing business with someone, dont give them just one business card, give them two, and ask them to refer someone to you. 2. Mailers and Reminders Keep a tickler file handy on all of your customers birthdays, kids birthdays, and anniversaries. Send them a card to wish them well on their special occasion. They wont be expecting it, making them all the more appreciative, it also keeps you in their thoughts, reminding them that they know a mortgage specialist that they can refer should the topic ever arise. It also gives you a reason to send out more business cards and keep them circulating.
Remember, the average home owner refinances, or purchases on average every three years, so it is important to stay in front of your customer. 3. Phone Numbers Giving your phone number to your customer seems obvious, but it is equally important to give them your cellular phone number as well as your work number, and let them know that they can feel free to call you at any time, this will personalize the relationship you have with your customer and give them a comfort zone where they feel as though they can really trust you. 4. Become Active Become active in local organizations and charities, here are a few examples: Chamber of Commerce
Rotary
Lions Club
Networking Groups
Church
Local Youth Athletic Associations 5. Apparel Wear your companys logo, It doesnt hurt to have a few polos or dress shirts in your wardrobe with your company logo on it for attending special events or just going out to lunch, lets face it, its free advertising, and it shows that you take pride in the company that you work for. 6. Body Language Your body language can speak volumes. Always smile when its appropriate, and speak clearly and slowly so that people will understand you. Eye contact is also very important when talking to people, it lets your client know that you are very confident in what you do, and that you believe in what you are saying.
It is also important to be empathetic when appropriate as well, sometimes it is better to listen than to speak. Not everybody is in the ideal situation, so it is important that you understand where they are coming from, and exactly what they will need. 7. Tag Lines When your answer the phone, make sure you answer it in a professional manner and state your name. You can also add a tag line promoting a product or promotion. Here are a few examples. Hello, thank you for calling XYZ Mortgage Company, this is John Doe, how may I help you? Hello, thank you for calling XYZ Mortgage Company, this is John Doe, have you heard about our interest only loans? 8. Partnerships Partner up with a few Realtors in you area, this way you can attend their open houses, this is a great way to make contacts and make people aware of all the programs you have available. Remember to be prepared with plenty of business cards and literature. 9. Product Knowledge This is perhaps one of the most important marketing tools that you can posses. It is so important to have the ability to be able to speak off the cuff when asked about a particular product. It sends a clear message to the customer that you know what you are talking about, and the better you know the product the more confident you will be. Remember, your client is considering perhaps the biggest financial decision they will ever make, they need to trust you and believe in you! Take ten minutes out of every day to learn some of the benefits of the programs your company offers. Youll be surprised at how quickly you become an expert. 10. Show them your appreciation Over the course of the loan process, it is fair to say that you have built a very good relationship with your customer, and like all relationships you want this one to last. Once the loan is closed, take the time to thank them by sending them something to let them know that you appreciate their business. It could be a thank you card, or a small care package. My suggestion would be to send them a small care package, preferably to their work place, this way, all of their fellow employees will want to know who sent it and why, this is a great way to get them talking about you, which could easily lead to lots of referrals. How to Grow Violets in a Greenhouse

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

By Liza Othman If the plants are to be grown in the beds in the house they should be in place by the middle of May, if not before. The soil for this purpose should be even richer than is required for field-grown plants when they are set in the house, and in addition to the rich compost a liberal quantity of ground bone can be used to advantage. If an old solid bed is to be used, the surface should be taken off and three or four inches of compost, composed of three parts of rotten sods and one part of decomposed cow manure, added. While one strong plant in a place will generally make a good clump, some growers use two or three. About once a week or ten days the surface of the bed should be loosened and all runners should be pinched off. In four or five months after the plants were set, strong plants will be formed and flowers will show. As the weather gets colder, and before severe frosts come, the sash should be placed on the house, but the arrangements for thorough ventilation should be ample, and it should at no time be neglected. Care should be taken to regulate the time of watering, to permit the plants to dry off before night. If they are syringed, it should be only early in the morning of bright days, and, so far as possible, the water should not be allowed to fall upon the leaves when it is applied to the soil. As sub-irrigation not only admits of applying the water without wetting the surface soil, but aids in keeping the foliage dry, it is especially desirable for this crop. For several years many growers have experienced considerable loss from what is known as the “violet disease.” Really, there are a half dozen diseases that attack the violet, any one of which may practically ruin the crop. The “eel-worms” (Nematodes) also work havoc, particularly in poorly drained soil, by causing galls upon the roots. The violet diseases are, undoubtedly, one and all, invited by unfavorable conditions of growth or surroundings. A superabundance of fresh stable manure might cause a soft watery growth ; a high temperature and long continued forcing would also weaken their vitality and render them easy victims. The real cause is that the spores (seeds) of the different diseases find conditions favorable to their propagation and growth. Much can be done to hold them in check if the decayed leaves are frequently removed, and the germs destroyed. With healthy plants to start with, and with proper care in watering and ventilating, the danger of the appearance of the various violet diseases will be greatly reduced, but if any of the plants show traces of any disease, the injured leaves should be pulled off and burned. The surface of the soil should also be occasionally stirred and all litter removed. The violet is troubled by few insects, the most troublesome being the aphis and red spider; frequent fumigation for the former, and syringing for the latter, should hold them in check. Fat Loss Revealed (Part 2)

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

By Yuri Elkaim The secrets to achieving the lean athletic physique that youve always wanted are held by Canadas top trainer, Yuri Elkaim. Most people waste a lot of time in the gym with no real direction or positive results. Fitness and wellness coaches, such as Yuri Elkaim know there is a better way. Yuri is a former professional soccer, Certified Kinesiologist, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the nationally ranked University of Toronto mens soccer program, and considered by many as Canadas top trainer and fitness expert. Hes created Fitter U, the worlds only 12-week body shaping fitness program for iPod/MP3 players geared to helping people lose weight, burn fat, and improve their fitness level. In this article, Amy Coates, Total Wellness Consultings nutrition expert will be interviewing Yuri on various facets of weight loss. continued from Part 1. AC: So for beginners, a good nutrition program is possibly the most powerful factor? YE: Absolutely! Obviously a nutrition program is vital you must create a caloric deficit through a combined exercise and nutrition approach. But, more so I like to focus on getting my clients to focus on eating healthier, higher quality foods. I like to preach the qualitative side of nutrition more so than the quantitative calorie counting side. So the key for the fat loss programs I use is exactly that how can we force the body to burn as many calories as possible, and continue to burn them between workouts. The idea is to demand as much work from the body as possible and maintain that caloric burn for as long as possible. Now the ONLY reason the body burns calories is because the muscle tissue is working. It doesnt matter what activity you are involved in aerobics or weight training its muscular demand that determines caloric burn. So you have to begin with that in mind. Lets think about this: You can run a mile in ten minutes. You can swim a mile in twenty minutes. After a year of swimming every day and not running you can now swim a mile in 16 minutes. Without running how much has your running improved? Very little.
Why? We only have ONE cardiovascular system so why doesnt improving your swimming (and cardio system) automatically improve your running? Because the ONLY reason your cardio system was involved in the first place was because of demand from your muscular system. So you adapted to the SPECIFIC MUSCULAR demands of swimming which by default then involves the cardiovascular system its not the other way around as most people think. The muscles dont move because of cardiovascular demand the cardio system is elevated because of muscular demand. AC: Whats the takeaway message? YE: Hopefully the readers can understand that we need to program the body based on the movements its going to perform not based on the cardiovascular system. Thats an upside down method. AC: So what methods work for fat loss? What methods are ineffective or inefficient for fat loss? YE: Circuit weight training and interval training always work. Steady state aerobic work never works long term in the real world. Now for those of you out there who will no doubt get caught up talking about health, cardiac heart disease, cholesterol etc - I’m not arguing with you. But were talking about fat loss here. However - for fat loss, the research is unequivocal - high intensity work is superior. I think the problem is this: Aerobic training by nature is lower intensity. At some point you get so good at it that it just doesn’t burn as many calories, and in effect, you are burning fewer calories than you used to for the same time investment. So what do you do? Go for longer and inevitably run into the same problem? Or increase the intensity? Increasing the intensity is the obvious answer. AC: You have commented that aerobics were useless for fat loss. This caused a lot of controversy. What did you mean? YE: I’m sure you’ll agree Amy that it only seemed to cause controversy with people who don’t do this for a living. Most of the good practitioners in this area didn’t even blink. It’s not controversial at all in terms of fat loss and I’m getting bored going over it. I don’t think anyone who has trained themselves or anyone else has ever seen low intensity cardio to be a very effective fat loss tool. The loss in lean mass that is typical in most weight loss programs needs to be offset - and steady state aerobic training (despite it’s plentiful health benefits) only adds to that problem. So let me expand on what I meant: When I said “Aerobics are useless for fat loss” what I meant was “aerobics are useless for fat loss”. Is that clearer? Ok - to be less antagonistic, let’s just say that aerobic training for fat loss is the most overrated and overemphasized method in use today. It’s completely outdated as a fat loss modality.
Here’s something to remember write it on your fridge it you have to:
Lifting weights in the intensity zone of 8-12 reps coupled with short rest periods has been shown beneficial for releasing the androgenic hormone testosterone and growth hormone. These important hormones encourage development of lean muscle mass (metabolically active tissue). Fat, on the other hand is just along for the ride! Aerobic exercise has been linked with the release of the catabolic hormone cortisol, which is antagonistic to the development of lean muscle mass. The efficiency argument is interesting. Does weight training build muscle? No. It breaks down muscle and the body ADAPTS by building more muscle. So in aerobic training - when we “encourage the use of fat” - do we force that same body to adapt by storing more fat? Interesting, most exercise and fitness experts all seem to think so. Think about it for a moment. Who is leaner and more defineda 100m sprinter or marathon runner??? Seriously - there are thousands of overweight individuals each year who complete marathons. Now completing a marathon is damn impressive to me. However it shows that the aerobic fitness needed to complete a marathon doesn’t have anything necessarily to do with creating a fat loss effect. So if you are capable of two to three hours of steady state running and still not be burning enough fat - we can either go to a higher intensity or you can try four hours of running. Any takers for the latter? In terms of fat loss - calories burned are the most important factor. And aerobic training burns less calories than anaerobic training and weight training overall (besides doing very little to increase your metabolism -your body’s calorie burning engine). So if we accept that lean mass is a major factor in your fat burning engine - and aerobic training makes that engine smaller (i.e. less muscle) and more efficient at burning fat (remember more efficient means it burns LESS) - how can having a smaller more efficient fat burning machine burn more fat? It doesn’t. AC: So you are saying that cardio is the least important component? YE: I don’t think so necessarily. However, I do believe that a combination of properly structure strength training accompanied by high-intensity interval training is the MOST effective way to burn fat while promoting lean muscle mass. The results speak for themselves, time and time again! End Your Weight Loss Worries - New Type Of Diet Was Invented

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

By Alberto Martinez Miller There are heaps of diets out there and even some of the widely known diets, such as the low carb diets, low fat diets and even the low calorie diets simply don’t work. There is a reason for these diets not working and why the new discovered diet does work. To put it simply, the other diets don’t work because your body is smarter than that and just adjusts itself to your eating habits. Below are the reasons why the most popular diets around won’t work for you or anyone else, for that matter. Low Carb Diets Low carb diets are almost starvation diets. While you may lose weight at first from starving yourself of carbohydrates, , the weight is going to just keep on coming back, unless you continue starving. Because of the outrageous restrictions that you are put under with a low carb diet, it is unlikely that you will be able to stick with it for a long period of time. Low Fat Diets Low fat diets simply don’t work. We are all aware of the amount of fats in our diets and we watch this continuously. Even those who watch their fat levels and buy low fat foods are still getting fatter. So it just goes to prove that low fat diets don’t work. Low Calorie Diets You can’t lose weight by starving yourself, it’s that simple! What happens is, when your body is taking in a certain number of calories and they drop suddenly, the body adapts itself by adjusting the metabolism. This is your body’s way of going into survival mode and protecting you. Simply put, starving yourself and stopping your calorie intake will not help you lose weight. So How Do You Lose weight? The way to lose weight is by shifting the calories that you eat, basically tricking your body. Just like we mentioned above - the reason that a low calorie diet won’t work and the reason why this special diet will, is closely related. The body adjusts itself to the way you eat. For example, if you eat a diet that contains 2000 calories frequently, then the body adjusts itself to that ratio over the following few days. By rotating the types of calories eaten, you can make your body burn a larger amount of calories than your intake for the next few days. When there are no more calories for your body to burn it then starts burning fat. With the help of a meal generator, you can follow this diet easily with customized eating plans that you can generate in a matter of seconds. This means that you no longer have to calculate the calorie intake or read labels. What makes the new discovered diet so effective is that you can still have a life while losing weight. You are still allowed to eat out, drink alcohol and you can continue eating more than 3 times per day, so there is no starvation involved. Additionally, you are allowed to have cheat’ days, so that you never feel deprived of the foods that you love to eat. After you slim down, it is important to maintain your new weight. This new ditet will also teach you how to get rid of your excess weight and keep it off for good. Why not try it? After all, what have you got to lose, apart from some weight, of course. Getting Married: The Truth About Stuff

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

By Kathi Dameron As you embark on this journey of marriage you will probably be entering a period of your life that could be characterized as a time of accumulating lots of stuff. Perhaps you already have a lot of stuff.
Perhaps your fiancee already has a bunch of stuff and now as you prepare to begin a life together… you are almost destined to accumulate even more stuff. While it is certainly true that we need certain things to make a home comfortable, being able to discern
the worthwhile, valuable and essential from the frivolous, unnecessary junk is a skill that will ultimately lead to smart, savvy money management instead of a garage or storage building full of useless junk. The truth about stuff can be clearly experienced in classified advertisements and many garages across America on Saturday mornings. Just hit the garage sale circuit some Saturday morning and see for yourself! All the stuff that originally cost plenty of money new, when sold might bring in a dollar or two at a garage sale. These are items that you might have paid hundreds and hundreds of dollars to purchase originally. This is the truth about stuff! It is a good thing to get smart about stuff! When you go collecting stuff ask yourself: 1. Do we really need this? 2. Why do we really want this? 3. Can we really afford this? 4. Will this item stand the test of time? 5. What if we took the same amount of money that we would spend on this and invest it instead. How much money will the investment make for us? 6. Will getting this item take us away from our financial goals or move us closer to them? 7. Do we even have financial goals? Having financial goals is like having a blueprint for a building or a roadmap for a trip. A well designed plan will deliver your goals in a smart and efficient manner. The truth about stuff is that it is often because of the unnecessary accumulation of stuff, that people experience short falls in achieving financial goals. Crunch the numbers! See for youself. Let the Saturday garage sales be your teacher and while you are driving the Saturday morning circuit why not pick up some bargains and put the money you saved in an account that will work for you! Safety for Construction Workers

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

By Brian Medini Working in the construction industry can be dangerous. The nature of the work carries risks, and accidents can result in serious injuries or even death. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) law requires employers to provide a work place that is safe and free from hazards. Yet, everyday construction workers face dangers that threaten their health and lives. According to OSHA, each year

A 1000 workers die in construction related accidents
A quarter of a million workers suffer injuries resulting in lost work days
Construction accidents cost the industry $13 billion in workers compensation cost alone

OSHA statistics also show that 90% of the fatalities occur in four categories

Caught between objects
Struck by objects
Electrocution
Falls

These accidents are, therefore, preventable and can be avoided with the proper safety training, precaution, and common sense. Construction work can indeed be dangerous. The line between a near miss and a fatality is thin. Although, the government will enforce safety and health laws and employers have an obligation to provide a safe and healthy workplace, it is still your responsibility, and you owe it to yourself and your loved ones, to stay safe and out of harms way. Government regulators and inspectors cannot be present at construction sites at all times and, due the nature of the construction business, employers cannot guarantee a 100% safe work place. Simple things such as a change in the weather or the momentary inattention of a fellow worker can lead to a dangerous situation in an instant. With the proper safety training, awareness of your rights and responsibilities, and vigilance against hazardous work conditions you can reduce, if not eliminate altogether, your risk of being injured at work. Here are some things you can do.

Take advantage of training programs provided by your employer, your union, and your safety society.
Observe safety rules and regulations at all times.
Know your equipment and use them correctly.
Wear and use the right personal protective equipment at all times.
Use proper barriers and guards always.
Don’t take short cuts with fire, electrical, or fall protection safety equipment.
Be sure to crib, block and secure all loads as soon as possible.
Take the time to do the job correctly.
Report unsafe work conditions.
Refuse to work in unsafe conditions.

Above all, be alert. It’s your life and health that is at risk.

If you notice a hazardous situation at work you should bring it to the immediate attention of your employer, your craft steward, or OSHA. To report an emergency, fatality, or imminent life threatening situation to OSHA call 1-800-321-OSHA (6742), TTY 1-877-889-5672. To report other unsafe work conditions contact your local OSHA regional office. You can file a report online or by fax, mail, and telephone. You can request anonymity and OSHA will respect your request. Here are some useful links. File online - http://www.osha.gov/pls/osha7/eComplaintForm.html
